Classic Coffeehouses
Café Central
Café Central is one of Innsbruck’s most important coffee houses and looks back on a turbulent history. Since its opening in 1876, it has been a meeting place for female artists, students and connoisseurs. Under the careful management of the Fröschl family, the traditional house was lovingly restored and its original character was preserved. With a classic coffeehouse flair, cultural tradition and central location, Café Central still embodies Innsbruck’s vibrant coffeehouse culture.
Café Munding
Not far from the Golden Roof, nestled in the former Gumpphaus on Mundingplatzl, you’ll find the traditional Munding confectionery. In 1803, Johann Nepomuk Munding founded the Munding Confectionery Women’s Café and soon became known beyond Tyrol’s borders for his bakeries. Not only in culinary terms, from fruit lemonade to fine punch to ice cream, his son and successor Hans Munding was impressive: he is the inventor of the world’s first mechanical dough mixer.
Even today, the ancestor’s inventive spirit is still palpable. Christoph Munding, who runs the café together with his sister Almut, continues to develop new things. Highly recommended are the fine-mouthed Munding macaroons. The sweet shingles from the Golden Roof also provide a special delight for the palate. Pistachio marzipan, almond nougat, honey-roasted almonds and sweet chocolate are lovingly and by hand processed into delicate chocolates in over 15 steps.
Only ingredients that meet strict criteria are accepted in Munding, so chocolate may only be supplied by the French fine brand Valrhona. The mere sight of the lovingly decorated display case makes hearts race and makes you want to take a culinary journey through the world of patisserie. Over a cup of house-roasted coffee and a slice of cake, reflect on the impressions from your tour of Innsbruck on the charming terrace of the Munding pastry shop.
Café Katzung
Since 1793, Café Katzung in the heart of Innsbruck has represented true Austrian coffeehouse culture. In its historic rooms near the Golden Roof, the traditional building combines a historic atmosphere with warm hospitality. Today –under the new management of the Dengg family–, Innsbruck’s oldest café invites you to enjoy, linger, and explore.
Café im Hof
An oasis in the middle of the city, on beautiful days the quiet, cozy garden beckons you to linger. The custom-made awnings provide cooling shade and make you forget the hustle and bustle of the city. Here the boss still cooks himself. Martin Ruetz turned his hobby into a career and you can feel it. The finest culinary highlights are served here with great love; its beef tartare and the finest beef fillets with giant campis are well known in the city. In addition, the restaurant-café “im Hof” offers light and varied lunch menus (including vegetarian), as well as constantly changing weekly dishes, adapted to the respective season.
